UMC Adopts New Approach to Retain Workforce

In an effort to address the high turnover rate characteristic of the Taiwanese engineering community, UMC is departing from the stock bonus scheme traditionally used throughout Taiwan's ICT industry. The company is offering a two-year binding two-year contract to over 500 of its engineers and administrators. Employees signing the agreement will receive a two to three-month signing bonus but will have to pay the equivalent amount of money if they leave within two years.
